The music swells. I never expected the music to swell and the credits to roll with Mike Johnson’s face in the center of the frame. But before we move on to the next congressional melodrama, let’s make sure we’ve given Johnson his due. In an era this intensely and corrosively partisan, it’s especially important that we give warranted praise and appropriate thanks to people with whom we usually disagree. Tribalism discourages that, but a healthy democracy demands it.

Gomes Kopp and her husband, Alyssa’s stepfather, are German but have a home on the Greek island of Crete. They had been adopted by a German family, and Gomes Kopp had offered to bring them over. If you live in one of America’s cities, you probably see homeless people all the time. That’s what Mark Horvath discovered firsthand in 1995, when he lost his job and wound up homeless for eight years. On April 22, the Supreme Court is set to hear the case of Johnson v. Grants Pass, the most significant case in decades about homeless people’s rights. The case will determine whether cities can arrest or fine the homeless — even if there’s no other shelter. As the homeless plaintiffs wrote, this would be “punishing the city’s involuntarily homeless residents for their existence.”

New York CNN —Drivers nationwide are facing the biggest car insurance rate increases since 1976. Up more than 22% compared to last year, rising car insurance rates are one of the biggest contributors to overall inflation, which hit a new six-month high last month, according to the Consumer Price Index. Car insurers are raising rates higher for a number of reasons. For instance, the cost of repairing cars has gone up as car parts have become increasingly more expensive. But if you don’t drive a lot, you may be wondering why you’re being subjected to such high rates given insurers typically base rates off of how much you drive, among other factors.

☆ Opinion: It’s time for us to let go of Bridget Jones

Bridget Jones may be neurotic, absurd and mired in patriarchy, but she’s a hell of a lot more fun than any black coffee-glugging, Marx-bothering Sally Rooney heroine. The third film, 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby” (which followed the 2004 sequel, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”) was enjoyable enough, but it left me feeling as though I’d filled my plate one too many times at a delicious but overstuffed buffet. (It is also a truth universally acknowledged that a piece of writing mentioning Bridget Jones or any Jane Austen adaptation must contain the phrase “it is a truth universally acknowledged,” so that’s out of the way). Bridget Jones changed that. The most disappointing thing about Bridget Jones was always the reaction to her, especially Renée Zellweger’s portrayal.
